How to effectively integrate AI into their marketing, based on the insights from Rich Harshaw.
I. The Core Problem: AI is a Magnifier, Not a Strategy
The Trap of the "Shiny Object": Contractors often adopt new AI tools rapidly without a long-term plan, leading to an overly fragmented approach.
Faster, But Generic: If your marketing is already generic, using AI will simply help you produce more "crap," just a lot faster.
Fundamentals Haven't Changed: The core principles of marketing are the same as they were 30 years ago during the Yellow Pages era. If you do not differentiate yourself from competitors, buyers will only care about price.
II. The 3 Biggest AI Mistakes Contractors Make
No Strategy: Using tools willy-nilly just because they work, without connecting them to a larger framework, brand voice, or messaging strategy.
Soulless Content: Relying on AI to generate generic platitudes (e.g., "We've been in business for 40 years," "Satisfaction guaranteed") instead of highlighting what actually makes the company different or better.
Giving Too Much Control to AI: Also known as "needing an adult in the room." Letting AI do everything (like building a cheap website in five days) without human marketing or copywriting expertise to oversee and ensure the output is actually good.
III. The Foundation of Effective Marketing: Discovering Your Identity
Before using AI to amplify your message, you must clearly define who you are and why you are different.
The Five Pillars of Identity: Evaluate your business based on:
Products
Workmanship
How you treat customers (e.g., punctual communication, no high-pressure sales)
Core values
Culture and reputation
Extracting the Details: Finding your true identity requires deep discovery. It takes "a giant crowbar and a lot of elbow grease" to look past the surface and find the specific practices that set you apart—such as not requiring a deposit because your company is financially stable, or guaranteeing a no-pressure, 30-minute sales consultation.
IV. Turning Identity into Storytelling
Instead of using boring marketing platitudes, use AI to help distribute real stories that prove your core values to potential customers.
Use Specific Details: Customers believe stories with real details. For example, instead of just saying "we have integrity," tell a specific story about a $40,000 siding job in Petaluma where a customer was upset about a wall, and you immediately spent $3,840 out of pocket to redo it without an argument.
Distribute the Stories: Once you have a powerful story, use AI to repurpose it into a blog post, a Facebook video, and pre-appointment text messages.
V. Smart Automation & System Integration
Rethink Pre-Appointment Automation: Instead of only sending generic logistical reminders (date/time) in the 48 hours before an appointment, send a sequence of helpful texts/emails containing your identity stories, videos, and evidence of your customer service.
Centralize Your Tech Stack: Strive to pull all of your marketing efforts (ads, website, automated follow-ups, CRM, and lead scoring) into one centralized hub so that the data can be monitored and your campaigns can automatically adapt based on actual sales conversions.
VI. Recommended Action Items for Contractors
Read: The first half of Rich Harshaw's book, Unlocking Unlimited Lead Flow, which focuses entirely on the principles of extracting your business identity
