The $6.5 million McGrath Family Mountain Center, to be built on an 873-m2 (9,400 sf) site located on the base of the slope of Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, will replace a 20-year-old center put in place temporarily for individuals of different abilities.
After six years of planning, preconstruction, and design efforts, the project is coming to reality. The groundbreaking ceremony was recently held by the non-profit National Ability Center (NAC), which provides adaptive recreation and outdoor adventures to individuals and families of all abilities, and it was attended by community and construction partners Vail Resorts, Park City Mountain, Big-D Signature, Architectural Nexus, and the town of Park City.
Located at a land leased by Park City Mountain Resort for 50 years, the two-story McGrath Family Mountain Center will serve as the home base for NAC’s ski and snowboard programs.
It aims to enhance the previous temporary mountain center, which had long been due for a replacement, by providing the following features in the new facility:
- The ability to serve significantly more people with disabilities in NAC’s ski and snowboard programs.
- Adequate indoor space to properly fit participants in mono and bi-skis. Once fitted, participants will slide on an artificial surface directly to the snow.
- Storage space for specialized adaptive ski equipment.
- Locker rooms for instructors and separate ones for differently abled competitive athletes.
- Reception area, instructor kitchen, office, uniform storage room with laundry facilities, specialized room for rest and wellness, and multi-purpose rooms for training and education.
- Restroom facilities on-site for NAC participants and their families: a major upgrade from the current reliance on public restrooms, which are a short walk from the existing center.
Community, construction, and design partners recently celebrated groundbreaking of the McGrath Family Mountain Center, which is anticipated to be completed by summer 2023.
