Helsinki Piloting Zero-Emission Construction Sites

Last year, Finland’s capital, Helsinki, started a dialogue with infrastructure contractors about emission-free street construction projects. The city is now outlining the selection criteria for bidding and will send out a call for tenders in February 2020. The criteria are limited to the site itself and will not include material transports.

In the criteria, machines are scored based on their weight. Ideally, all the machinery should be electric. Trucks, however, are allowed to run on biodiesel since there are practically no electric trucks in the market.

Helsinki wants to cut down both CO2 emissions and emissions harmful to health, such as particulate pollution. Initially, the city will focus on street and infrastructure sites but will consider other construction categories as well in the future.
