The Green Building Initiative (GBI) recently awarded Minneapolis, Minnesota’s IDS Center office skyscraper a Three Green Globes certification, pushing the total commercial space with the certification to more than 4.6 million m2 (500 million sf).

For nearly two decades, GBI has supported building owners, design teams, and operations professionals by providing educational roadmaps and third-party certifications to validate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria and sustainability efforts, while reducing climate impacts and improving the built environment.

GBI’s commercially focused Green Globes certification and federal Guiding Principles Compliance verification programs have risen in prominence in recent years, driven by the market’s need for streamlined, comprehensive, and cost-effective ESG validation and certification programs.

The 140,000 m2 (1,500,000 sf) IDS Center is a prominent structure in downtown Minneapolis,

standing 57 stories tall. It received a Three Green Globes certification after a series of energy efficiency retrofits and renovations.

“GBI is excited to celebrate hitting 500 million sf certified, and the IDS Center is a great example of an existing facility which is prioritizing stewardship, health and wellness, and resilience,” says Vicki Worden, GBI’s president and CEO.
