The International Code Council’s (ICC’s) 42nd annual Building Safety Month has kicked off, with this year’s theme of “Safety for all: Building codes in action.”

Held during the month of May, the program helps to raise awareness of the importance of building codes and the role of building safety professionals in ensuring communities remain safe, sustainable, and resilient.

Week one of the campaign highlights how building science, innovation, and energy efficiency are leveraged to create safe and sustainable construction within communities. It also explores how energy codes and standards are an essential component to increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Each subsequent week will focus on a specific theme critical to building safety including “Exploring Careers in Building Safety,” taking place in week two; “Understanding the Four Phases of Emergency Management,” in week three; and “Creating a Safe and Abundant Water Supply,” in week four. Throughout the month-long campaign, a series of free virtual events will also take place:

  • May 10 from 2 to 3 p.m., “Building Your Future: Career Paths for Military Veterans”
  • May 10 at 1 p.m., Facebook Live event with Matthew Winn, code council senior vice-president of training and education
  • May 24 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., “Backflow Basics: Repair, Testing, and Maintenance”
  • May 25 from 2 to 3 p.m., “Pool Owner Safety 101”
